France's 2022 EU Council Presidency:
A Hard Road Ahead


In January 2022, France will hold the rotating presidency of the EU Council where it will aim to push the EU forward in several key areas, from climate change to security. The French presidency will have to deal with intra-EU friction and lingering turbulences in transatlantic relations. To make matters worse, the French presidential election in April 2022 will divert precious attention and resources away from Brussels.

Elections Update:
A Test for Georgia's Democracy

The Republic of Georgia's municipal elections this October saw the incumbent Georgian Dream party receiving 47 percent of a vote viewed as an informal referendum on its nine-year rule. In the face of an increasingly polarized and dissatisfied public, Georgian Dream appears intent on striking a delicate balance between continued Western integration and normalization of relations with Russia. Whether it can do both while also resisting its own anti-democratic tendencies remains to be seen.

The Future of Green Energy in Ukraine

Sally Painter traveled to Kyiv where she participated in a high-level dialogue event on The Future of Green Energy in Ukraine, hosted by the Atlantic Council.

Speakers and participants included senior government officials from the U.S., Canada, Norway, Ukraine, and European Union, development finance institutions, and industry.

Sally highlighted the recent announcement of the Joint Statement of Intent to advance energy and climate cooperation through the U.S.-Ukraine Strategic Energy and Climate Dialogue, with particular focus on integration of renewable energy sources.


Economic and Geopolitical Challenges in
Latin America and the Caribbean

Gabriel Sánchez Zinny participated in a conference on "Economic and Geopolitical Challenges in Latin America and the Caribbean," hosted by the International Foundation for Freedom and Centro de Análisis para Políticas Públicas (CAPP) in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

The event was headlined by Dominican Republic President Luis Abinader, former president of Argentina Mauricio Macri, U.S. Congressman Mark Green, and former mayor of Madrid Ana Botella, among others. Speakers discussed the importance of working against authoritarianism while deepening regional integration, inclusive development, and democracy.
